    Zaire was first named The Congo Free State in 1885. In 1907 the Belgian Government renamed the Country Belgian Congo. Belgian Congo is mentioned in four documents in the Institutional Repository [EBD/49/453; EBD/49/453, Sup. 1; EBD/49/536; EBD/49/536, Sup. 1] After independence on June 30, 1960 it was renamed Democratic Republic of the Congo [Sec/Circ/65/9] . In 1970 it was renamed Republic of Zaire, and on May 17, 1997 it was renamed again Democratic Republic of the Congo (D.R.C.)[Sec/Circ/71/133]. Zaire became a member of the International Monetary Fund on September 28, 1963. For the IMF document reflecting Zaire's change of name to Democratic Republic of the Congo [Sec/Circ/97/54].
