Zaire was first named The Congo Free State in 1885. In 1907 the Belgiam Government renamed the Country Belgian Congo. After independence on June 30, 1960 it was renamed Democratic Republic of the Congo. In 1970 it was renamed Republic of Zaire, and on May 17, 1997 it was renamed again Democratic Republic of the Congo (D.R.C.). Zaire became a member of the International Monetary Fund on September 28, 1963
